Thank Goodness I’m Female – Leadership Cohort

Thank Goodness I’m Female – Leadership Cohort

Grades 9-12

The Thank Goodness I’m Female (TGIF) Leadership Cohort is a skills-building leadership group for high school girls to develop, cultivate, and implement the skills to lead and inspire others to action toward common goals by engaging with peer and adult mentors in skill-building trainings provided by diverse Central Ohio experts. The Cohort engages girls around a “you can’t be what you can’t see” model, providing high-quality, after-school space for girls to influence social change and nurture the skills to lead. The Cohort is comprised of 8-10 high school girls in Delaware County. from Big Walnut, Buckeye Valley, Olentangy School District High Schools, and Delaware Hayes High School.

The Cohort builds upon the skills from the TGIF/GAL programs with more intensive and strategic opportunities for girls at higher levels and exposes them to social connectedness and adult mentors to cultivate new leadership experiences in big picture contexts. High school girls at the 2019 Girls Supporting Girls Conference expressed the need for more leadership opportunities in community and civic engagement; this Cohort meets these needs by providing a supportive environment to examine social constructs (e.g. gender, race) and the implicit/explicit bias impacts on representational leadership on micro and macro societal levels.

The Cohort meets once a month for modules and check-ins. The Cohort utilizes female leaders and female peer leaders in central Ohio to serve as experts on various leadership topics that are discussed in each module. Past modules have included:

  • Negotiation, Assertive Communication, & Public Speaking Skills
  • Economic Empowerment & Financial Literacy
  • Identify & Define Your Leadership Style & Goal Setting
  • Identify, Challenge, & Manage Barriers to Women’s Participation in Leadership
  • Stress Management, Wellness, & Self-Care
  • Leadership in Your School and Beyond
  • Evaluation & Data Analysis
  • Advocacy, Self-Advocacy, & Allyship

This project is funded by: The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio and the Delaware-Morrow Mental Health Recovery Services Board.
